Malcolm S. Duthie, PhD
Scientist II

Malcolm Duthie joined IDRI in April 2002. Malcolm's main research interest is determining and examining the host/pathogen interactions that initiate and control immune responses, how these interactions can be beneficially manipulated, and ultimately, their practical application within disease control programs.
Malcolm obtained a BSc (Hons) Immunology degree from the University of Glasgow, Scotland, in 1996. His postgraduate studies were performed at the University of Edinburgh in the laboratory of Professor Mary Norval. His PhD thesis, entitled "Local Effects of Ultraviolet Radiation on Cutaneous Immune Responses," was completed in December 1999. He then moved to Seattle to join Dr. Stuart Kahn's laboratory at the University of Washington, examining protective and pathologic immune responses during experimental T. cruzi infection. After transitioning Dr. Kahn’s laboratory to IDRI, Malcolm continued investigating T. cruzi infection and became involved with IDRI’s leprosy vaccine development program. In 2006, Malcolm shifted focus to the leprosy program and is currently working with collaborators in several countries to develop new diagnostic tools and identify vaccine candidates to improve the treatment of leprosy.
During his time in Edinburgh, Malcolm acted as a tutor in the departments of Immunology, Medical Microbiology and Medicine, and also served as the secretary of the Edinburgh University Medical Microbiology Society. Malcolm is currently a member of both the British Society for Immunology and the American Association of Immunologists.
