Franco M. Piazza, MD, MPH

Medical Director


Franco Piazza joined IDRI as Medical Director in July of 2003. He is currently in charge of clinical development of vaccine candidates for leishmaniasis and tuberculosis.

Dr. Piazza was born in and grew up in Lima, Peru. He graduated from Cayetano Heredia University School of Medicine in Lima, Peru in 1982. Between 1982 and 1989, Dr. Piazza completed residency training in pediatrics, obtained a master's degree in public health, and completed fellowship training in pediatric pulmonology at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. From 1989 to 2001, he was an attending physician in pulmonary medicine at Children's National Medical Center and a faculty member in the department of pediatrics of the George Washington University, in Washington, DC. Between January of 2001 and June of 2003, he was Director of Clinical Development in Infectious Diseases and Immunology at MedImmune, Inc. in Gaithersburg, Maryland, where he worked in the clinical development of monoclonal antibodies.
