Randall F Howard, PhD

Project Manager

Randy Howard joined IDRI in 2007 as a Project Manager of the Leishmania Vaccine Development Project and is now also involved in the management of the malaria adjuvant, tuberculosis, and leprosy projects. He is a molecular parasitologist interested in developing preventative and therapeutic treatments for parasitic and other microbial pathogens.

Dr. Howard was born, and lived briefly, in Seattle, WA before his parents eventually settled in the Midwest. He received his BA in Molecular Biology at Vanderbilt University in 1973 and a PhD in Cell Biology from the University of Minnesota in 1978. After completing his post-doctoral training studying biochemical changes in cells transformed with temperature-sensitive mutants of Rous sarcoma virus at Justus-Liebig Universität in Giessen, Germany, he joined the Research Institute of Scripps Clinic in 1981 as a Research Scientist to study the blood-stage cycle of the malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum. He continued those investigations at the Agouron Institute in La Jolla, CA in 1987 and then the Seattle Biomedical Research Institute in 1990. Dr. Howard made a detour for several years to pursue his passion for teaching Microbiology and other Biology courses at Seattle University and some area Community Colleges. He is excited to be back now to pursue another passion, microbial pathogenesis and its prevention.
