Joshua Oluoch Odingo, PhD

Director, Chemistry
Joshua Odingo is the Director of Chemistry in the TB Drug Discovery Group at IDRI.
Joshua’s work focuses on the application of medicinal chemistry to the discovery of novel bioactive compounds against tuberculosis. His efforts are part of a multidisciplinary team employing tools and strategies from molecular biology, biochemistry, microbiology, and medicinal chemistry for the identification and optimization of bioactive compounds into drug development candidates. Joshua has interest in developing research tool molecules for target identification and disease biology investigations. Joshua also has research interest in the discovery of novel vaccine adjuvants and oversees efforts in the design and synthesis of adjuvants.
Joshua is an organic/medicinal chemist with more than 10 years of industry experience in small-molecule drug discovery. Prior to joining IDRI, Joshua was a Senior Staff Scientist and a chemistry group leader on a prostaglandin D2 receptor antagonist (preclinical) project and also on a phosphodiesterase IV inhibitor (phase II) project at ICOS corporation. Joshua is an inventor on over 15 patents and an author on peer-reviewed articles.
Joshua received his B.Sc. in chemistry from Nairobi University and a Ph.D. in organic chemistry from Columbia University. He conducted two years of a postdoctoral fellowship at the department of bioorganic chemistry, Genentech Incorporation, where he studied new chemistry technologies for compound library synthesis.
