Scientist I

Magdalini Moutaftsi is a Scientist I at IDRI. Magda's work at IDRI is focused on understanding how adjuvants and formulations affect the immune response, particularly the induction of CD8 T cell responses in the context of protein vaccines. During her postdoctoral studies in the lab of Alex Sette at the La Jolla Institute for Allergy and Immunology, Magda analyzed the T cell responses to the smallpox vaccine, or vaccinia virus; one of the world's most succesful vaccines. Magda joined IDRI's Preclinical group in 2009, working mostly on malaria and TB. Recently, she has also started to focus on human translational models by using livestock animals.

Magda's MSc thesis focused on studying molecular virology of Rinderpest virus at the Institute for Animal Health in the UK, and she received her PhD at the University of Wales College of Medicine.
