Recently, we announced that we have registered our leprosy diagnostic, developed in conjunction with OrangeLife, for use in Brazil. The test is easy-to-use and fast — key components to helping diagnose this devastating disease up to a year in advance of visible signs.
Take a look at how the test works:

I am so excited !!!
Congratulations Malcolm,Steve, and all those at IDRI who’ve worked long and hard on this breakthrough! All those years of research have made it worthwhile so that thousands of people can receive the cure in time. So proud of you guys……
is there a description of the molecular basis for this test? What reacts with what?
In our leprosy RDT, we are measuring antibodies within blood/ serum that react with a combination of M. leprae proteins and glycolipid
Congratulations and indeed excited about your achievement. I was just reading again a report about your vaccine summit of October 2011 when I received this news about your test. Great news. Your 1.47 minute video demonstrating the test is probably interesting for people with better eyesight than I have, but thanks for showing us.
Dear Drs, congratulations.
can you tell more about it? all i understand by reading it that it diagnoses an infection of leprosy before symptoms appear. Can it differentiate between exposure to leprosy and disease ?
The rapid diagnostic test is registered with label claim of 95% sensitivity for MB leprosy, with 100% specificity against the validation serum panel used. As with any test, a broader picture of its performance and capabilities will emerge only as it is disseminated and becomes more widely used in field settings. Our lab-based studies indicate that the response rises with progression to actual disease, indicating discrimination between infection that is being cleared naturally and that that will cause disease (see our publications; “Use of protein antigens for early serological diagnosis of leprosy” by Duthie (2007), Clinical and Vaccine Immunology; “Early Revelation of Leprosy in China by Sequential Antibody Analyses with LID-1 and PGL-I” by Qiong-Hua P (2013) Journal of Tropical Medicine)
Being a medical laboratory scientist , sensitivity and specifity and of prime importance . Thank you. You just answered my question on sensitivity and specificity. Thank you so much.
