Tanya Parish, PhD

Acting Director, Drug Discovery

Professor Tanya Parish joined IDRI in 2007 as a Senior Scientist/Principal Investigator, and is responsible for the TB Discovery Research group. Her interests include drug target validation and the development of novel genetic methods for Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb). She has expertise in the molecular genetics and the microbiology of mycobacteria.

Tanya studied for her PhD at the National Institute for Medical Research with Philip Draper, where she investigated gene regulation in mycobacteria. She subsequently conducted post-doctoral research at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine with Neil Stoker, studying several facets of the biology of Mtb. In 2000, she took up an academic post at Barts and the London, Queen Mary's School of Medicine and Dentistry (UK), where she holds a post as Professor of Mycobacteriology. She still maintains an active research group in London, investigating the biology and pathogenesis of Mycobacterium tuberculosis.

Tanya has edited three books on mycobacteria and published numerous papers on the basic biology and genetics of Mtb. She has served on the Editorial Board of Molecular Biotechnology and Microbiology (UK). She is a member of the Acid Fast Club and previously served as its (Hon) Secretary.
