Winston Wicomb, PhD, LATG

Senior Scientist / Animal Facility Manager


Winston Wicomb joined IDRI in 2007 as facility manager and senior scientist. He also serves as the chair of the Institute's IACUC.

Dr. Wicomb is a biochemist with twenty years experience in biochemistry and transplantation research in the fields of heart, liver, and kidney preservation. He has over sixty publications with the major focus of his work in heart preservation. Dr. Wicomb also supervised the laboratories of the late Christian Barnard (South Africa) and Dr. G. Collins California Pacific Medical Center, San Francisco, CA. He was the lead biochemist involved in chemical processing of porcine and bovine tissues for clinical transplantation. In addition, he has a broad knowledge in animal care and chaired IACUC committees since the early nineties (LATG certification). He received his PhD in Medical Biochemistry from Cape Town University, South Africa.
