Tanya Parish Tanya Parish

Place of Birth: Torquay, England

Current Position: Vice President, Drug Discovery

Reason Choosing Your Field of Work: From the age of seven, I knew I wanted to either be a scientist or a brain surgeon. Initially, I fell in love with biology during my time at school. We did a little bit of work on microbiology, and I went to the library and began reading about it. The diversity of microbiology is fascinating, how it can be found in everything from infectious disease to brewing beer. Being a scientist defines me; it fires me - and the joy of science is finding out something nobody else knows and then sharing that knowledge.

Reason for Choosing IDRI: While I have an academic post in England (as Professor of Mycobacteriology at Barts and the London School of Medicine and Dentistry at Queen Mary, University of London), I also find basic scientific research very satisfying. I feel that IDRI is a great place to do something practical, something applicable.

Career Goal: Tuberculosis is like a whirlpool – it sucks you in. And now, there’s a huge resurgence of TB in the western world and that, along with TB’s toll on developing countries as well as the rise of drug-resistant TB adds to the need for new drugs to combat the problem. I want to make a difference by developing drugs and working in conjunction with IDRI’s TB vaccine program.

Hobbies: I am an avid follower of soccer and Formula 1. My English Premier League team is Arsenal, but I always cheer for my home team, Torquay United - and, of course I do have Seattle Sounders season tickets!
